Sample instructor guidelines for implementation

Your course or program might have different guidelines for things to remember during course implementation.  The following guidelines were created for the distance Cardiology program at BCIT, and could be adapted for your own use.  Keep in mind that different programs and course designs may require a different set of implementation guidelines.

First week of distance delivery class

•    Review class list in course and compare to register provided by program assistant
•    Contact each student to welcome them to the course (telephone or e-mail)
•    Ensure course outline is available to students
•    Post welcome message in course and make students aware of all important information regarding the course: exams, assignments, course set-up and tools to utilize (notes, announcements, etc), homework (hours/week), late assignments, missed exams, cheating and plagiarism student conduct guidelines
•    MOST importantly, make sure students are aware of how you will communicate with them eg. course e-mail and/or myBCIT e-mail, news function in D2L, live classroom (Collaborate) sessions.

During the course

•    Monitor course attendance via statistic tools in course
•    Maintain regular weekly contact with students and post messages to remind them of important and up coming information
•    Notify Program Head of students who you feel may have vacated the course

On course completion

•    Communicate with students when exams will be marked and posted to myBCIT
•    Enter final grades into myBCIT self-serve link, faculty tab, then final grades
